Just because the kids are back at school doesn’t mean we’re through with the hot temperatures quite yet. In fact, a number of Northern Colorado cities approached 100 degrees earlier in the week! It’s all the more reason to have a functional air conditioner both at home and at the office.

So how can you be sure that your A/C system is working the way it should? Here are several things worth trying, as referenced from Angie’s List.
Inspect your air filter
A dirty air filter causes your unit to work harder than normal. If you recently noticed that the temperature in your house won’t cool down, there’s a good chance that a dirty air filter is the culprit. Make a habit of changing the air filter every few months to ensure your system performs at optimal levels.
Check your thermostat
It’s natural for homeowners to stress over a potential HVAC problem. However, there may be a time when all you need to do is replace the batteries on the thermostat. A blinking battery light or icon on the thermostat likely indicates that fresh batteries are required.
Double-check your breakers
Every now and then, a high-voltage breaker can trip and cause your A/C unit to stop working. Once you’ve checked your air filter and thermostat, take a look at your breaker. Should the breaker be what’s giving you problems, flip it back and you should have a working system again.
Observe the unit itself
It certainly won’t hurt to step outside for a few minutes and observe the A/C unit itself. Your main focus should be the motor. If you can see and hear that the fan is still on, we’re willing to bet that it isn’t the problem.
Account for the temperature
As we mentioned at the beginning of the post, we’ve seen our fair share of 90-degree days in Northern Colorado the last few weeks. Unfortunately, these scorching temperatures can take a toll on older systems. If you’ve had your current A/C unit for a number of years and it’s no longer functioning at maximum efficiency, you may want to consider speaking with an air conditioning repair expert.
